Ambergris is a substance that comes from the stomach of the sperm whale. It is developed there due to the whales main source of food, the giant squid. The giant squid have beaks which are quite like a parrots beak and these beaks accumulate in the stomach of the sperm whale and begin to irritate the stomach lining. In defense to this, the whale secretes a thick, black, foul-smelling liquid which binds up the beaks and protects the whales stomach against them. When a large amount of ambergris has gathered in the whales stomach, it is then vomited out and that is when it hardens into a waxy, aromatic substance. Very rarely this is discovered floating in the ocean or washed up on coastal shorelines. It is in this form that ambergris becomes very valuable. With it's rich, earthy aroma, ambergris is used as a base note and fixative for perfumery applications intensifying the fragrance and giving it longevity. Occasionally we have ambergris for sale, so if you require any, please contact us and we will notify you of supply. |
